Zendesk AI alternatives for teams that need the AI to resolve
Teams that run Zendesk AI agents look for an alternative when the automation rate stops growing and every channel or language adds work. Compare the options, then test Aura next to Zendesk on your own help center.
A Zendesk AI alternative replaces Zendesk's AI agents with another AI agent, either on top of your helpdesk or together with a new one. The main options in 2026 are Customerly Aura, Intercom Fin, Freshdesk Freddy, Ada and Decagon. Teams switch when the share of conversations the AI resolves stops growing, or when each new channel, language or brand means another flow to build. Customerly Aura is one AI agent for chat, email, WhatsApp and Facebook, reads images and files, answers in any language, and resolves 72% of conversations on average across all Customerly customers.

What is a Zendesk AI alternative?
A Zendesk AI alternative is any AI agent that takes over the work Zendesk AI agents do today: answering customers, running procedures and handing conversations to people. There are two paths. You can add an AI agent on top of Zendesk and keep Zendesk for ticketing. Or you can move the AI and the inbox together to a platform built around its AI agent, such as Customerly.
Zendesk AI agents grew out of Zendesk's acquisition of Ultimate, announced in March 2024. Teams searching for an "Ultimate.ai alternative" are looking at the same product.
Why teams look for an alternative to Zendesk AI agents
Teams running Zendesk AI agents tell us the same thing: after launch, the share of conversations the AI resolves on its own stops growing, and every new channel, language or brand adds setup work. Zendesk's own documentation explains part of that work:
- One AI agent per channel type. In Zendesk's current AI agents experience, "each AI agent can interact on only one type of channel", so covering messaging and email means building and maintaining two AI agents.
- Text only. Zendesk states that its AI agents "process only text in conversations and tickets" and don't scan attached files or images. A customer's screenshot reaches a human, not the AI.
- Replies kept per language. Zendesk creates language-specific versions of system replies for each language, and scripted replies are translated and imported per language. Generated answers can be translated automatically.
- AI-only conversations are a separate ticket type. Until a conversation is escalated, Zendesk shows it as an AI agent ticket: read-only for most agents, and triggers don't run on it. Admins and agents with permission can take it over.
- An LLM decides what is resolved. Zendesk bills AI agents per automated resolution. After the conversation ends, an LLM reviews the transcript, and only conversations it classifies as a verified resolution count.
None of this makes Zendesk AI agents a bad product. It describes the architecture: an AI layer added to a ticketing system. Whether that fits depends on how many channels, languages and brands you run.
What changed in Zendesk AI in 2026
Zendesk now sells one AI agent offering. In March 2026 Zendesk announced that "the distinction between Essential and Advanced AI agent plans is being removed", with advanced capabilities such as agentic reasoning, multi-step procedures and API integrations included in Suite and Support plans. The rollout ran from 11 May to 12 June 2026 for new and Essential customers. Zendesk stops technical development of Essential and legacy AI agents, including the bot builder, by 31 August 2026.
For teams on legacy AI agents this means a rebuild either way. That is a natural moment to compare alternatives before rebuilding.
Zendesk AI alternatives compared
The main Zendesk AI alternatives differ most in two things: whether they replace Zendesk or sit on top of it, and how the AI is billed.
| Alternative | Replaces Zendesk or works with it | How the AI is billed (vendor's own page, 13 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Customerly Aura | Replaces it: AI agent + omnichannel inbox, help center and email campaigns | Per AI conversation: $0.50 on demand or $0.45 prepaid; plans include 10, 20 or 50 AI conversations a month |
| Intercom Fin | Intercom's helpdesk, or Fin on top of other helpdesks (Intercom lists Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Dixa, Front, Zoho, Sprinklr and Gorgias) | $0.99 per Fin outcome; 50 outcomes a month minimum on another helpdesk |
| Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent | Replaces it: Freshdesk helpdesk | First 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100 sessions |
| Ada | AI agent platform for voice, messaging and email that connects to your systems | Not published; quoted after a demo |
| Decagon | AI agent platform that connects to your systems | Per conversation or per resolution; rates not published |
| Zendesk AI agents (for reference) | Zendesk | Per automated resolution: 5 or 10 included per agent a month, then $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay-as-you-go |
Ask every vendor for three numbers on a sample of your own conversations: resolved by the AI, handed to a person, and wrong. A single "automation rate" hides the difference.
Zendesk AI agents vs Customerly Aura
Customerly Aura is one AI agent across every channel, with the inbox built around it. The table compares what each vendor states on its own pages.
| Zendesk AI agents | Customerly Aura | |
|---|---|---|
| Channels | One AI agent per channel type (messaging, email or voice) | One training, the same agent on chat, email, WhatsApp and Facebook |
| Images and files | Processes text only; attachments are not scanned | Multimodal: reads and understands images, PDF and TXT files customers share |
| Languages | Languages activated per agent; system replies kept per language; generated answers can be auto-translated | Reads and answers in any language from one knowledge base, with no extra setup |
| Human take-over | AI-only conversations are read-only tickets for most agents until escalation; admins and permitted agents can take over | Agents take over a conversation Aura is handling with "Assign to yourself", in the same inbox |
| Procedures | Multi-step procedures and API integrations, included since 2026 | AI Missions: workflows written in natural language that call your APIs and collect structured data before a hand-off |
| Billing | Per automated resolution, verified by an LLM | Per AI conversation: any conversation Aura takes part in counts once |
| Voice | AI agents for voice, with Zendesk voice | No voice channel today |
Prices for both are on each vendor's pricing page; see Customerly pricing and our Zendesk pricing guide.
The TeamSystem experience: Aura and Zendesk AI side by side
TeamSystem runs AI agents on both platforms: Aura on Fatture in Cloud, Italy's leading invoicing software with 600,000+ customers, and Zendesk AI agents on other TeamSystem products.
On the Zendesk side, the work that took the most time was structural. Each channel needed its own AI agent, use cases had to be kept short and separate so they would not overlap, and replies had to be maintained per language. Screenshots customers sent could not be read by the AI and went to a person. With Aura, one training covers every channel, the agent answers in any language from one knowledge base, and it reads the images and files customers send.
When TeamSystem compared the two on the same kind of customer questions, Aura won on accuracy. Read the Fatture in Cloud success story for the rollout and results.
What to check before you replace Zendesk AI agents
The fastest test is to run the alternative next to Zendesk, on your own content, before you switch anything. Load your public help center into the alternative, ask it the questions your customers asked last month, including a screenshot, a follow-up by email and a question in a second language, and compare the answers with Zendesk's. Our 15 questions to ask before you scale AI on your helpdesk turn that test into a checklist.
Moving off Zendesk AI: migration in brief
Moving off Zendesk AI agents means exporting your help center and ticket history, rebuilding the AI on the new platform, and switching one brand or channel at a time. Customerly's team assists the migration from Zendesk at no cost. The step-by-step version, including Zendesk's export options and their limits, is in our Zendesk migration guide.
When Zendesk AI is the better fit
Zendesk AI agents are the better fit when you need AI on the phone today, because Zendesk has voice AI agents and Customerly has no voice channel. They also fit teams that rely on Zendesk's workforce management and quality assurance add-ons, or groups where Zendesk is a company-wide standard and the AI must stay inside it. For a full helpdesk comparison, see Customerly vs Zendesk.
FAQ
Can I replace Zendesk AI agents without leaving Zendesk?
Yes. Some AI agents work on top of Zendesk while Zendesk stays your ticketing system. Customerly replaces the AI agent and the inbox together, and can run next to Zendesk on one brand or channel while you compare.
Is Ultimate.ai still available?
Ultimate is part of Zendesk. Zendesk announced the acquisition in March 2024, and Ultimate's technology became Zendesk's advanced AI agents, which Zendesk merged into a single AI agent offering in 2026.
How does Zendesk charge for AI agents?
Zendesk bills AI agents per automated resolution. Each plan includes 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, then $1.50 each on a commitment or $2.00 pay-as-you-go, according to Zendesk's pricing page on 13 October 2026. Details are in our Zendesk pricing guide.
Can one AI agent answer customers on chat and email?
In Zendesk's current AI agents experience, each AI agent works on one type of channel, so chat and email need two agents. Customerly Aura is trained once and answers on chat, email, WhatsApp and Facebook as the same agent.
Does the AI read the screenshots customers send?
Zendesk states that its AI agents process only text and don't scan attached files. Customerly Aura is multimodal: it reads and understands images, PDF and TXT files customers share.
What resolution rate should we expect?
It depends on your content and your conversation mix, so test on your own conversations. Across all Customerly customers, Aura resolves 72% of conversations on average.
How long does it take to move from Zendesk AI to Customerly?
It depends on the number of brands, channels and automations. Customerly's team assists the migration at no cost, and most teams start with one brand or channel next to Zendesk. See the Zendesk migration guide.
